Mike Anderson Headed to Arkansas

Missouri coach Mike Anderson is heading to Arkansas after all. The long-time Razorbacks assistant has decided to return to Fayetteville.  Anderson spent 17 years as Nolan Richardson’s assistant at Arkansas, but wasn’t considered for the job after Richardson was fired back in 2002.

Anderson flirted with Oregon a year ago before deciding to remain at Missouri.  He spent four years at UAB, going to three NCAA tournaments, and has been at Missouri for the past five seasons.

The Missouri Tigers went to the Elite Eight in 2009, advanced to the second round in 2010 and were eliminated by Cincinnati in the first round last week.  Missouri finished 23-11 each of the last two seasons.

Coach Anderson replaces John Pelphrey, who was fired after four seasons at Arkansas.

Mike Alden, Missouri A.D., praised Coach Anderson for the job he had done with the program since taking it over in 2006.  He wished Anderson well at Arkansas.  The search for Anderson's replacement will begin immediately.

Bearcats End Tigers Season

The Cincinnati Bearcats defeated the Missouri Tigers 78-63 in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday night.

The Tigers had a dream start to the game as they went on a 9-2 early run. It was the best several minutes of play that the Tigers showed since their February 23 win over Baylor. However, the Bearcats came back while the Tigers went cold from the field. The six seeded Bearcats held a 39-28 lead at halftime.
In the second half the Tigers bench showed some signs of life, but the Bearcats responded well offensively. The Big East team shot 53 percent on the night, while the Tigers only shot 37 percent.

The Tigers were lead by Ricardo Ratliffe with 13 points. Marcus Denmon and Laurence Bowers netted 10 points apiece.

Bearcats forward Yancy Gates scored 18 points. They now move on to play UConn on Saturday in the third round of the tournament.

Columbia, Mo. -

#11 University of Missouri Tigers (23-10) vs.
#6 University of Cincinnati Bearcats (25-8)
Tip-Off: 8:50 P.M. CT

Arena: Verizon Center (20,600)

Radio: Tiger Radio Network (Mike Kelly - Play by Play / Gary Link - Analyst)
TV: TNT (Tim Brando and Mike Gminski)
Rankings: Mizzou RV/RV; Cincinnati 25/RV in AP / USA Today Coaches Poll
Series: First Meeting
Coaches:
Missouri: Mike Anderson (Tulsa `82); 200-97 overall (9th); 111-56 at Mizzou (5th)
Cincinnati: Mick Cronin (Cincinnati `97) 155-100 overall (8th); 87-76 at Cincinnati (5th)

For Openers...
> Missouri Basketball returns to NCAA Tournament play for the third consecutive season as the #11-seeded Tigers battle the Cincinnati Bearcats for the first time in series history ... Missouri and Cincy meet at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., marking Missouri's first trip to our nation's capital since a 63-51 loss at Georgetown on Feb. 20, 1982.
> Mizzou is making its 24th trip to the NCAA Tournament overall ... The Tigers are 22-23 all-time in the Big Dance and have won five consecutive opening-round games dating back to an 84-70 loss to 8th-seeded North Carolina in 2000 ... That Carolina team ended up making the Final Four.
> Missouri is headed to the West Region for the eighth time in school history ... The Tigers last went West in 2009 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight ... Actually each of Mizzou's last two trips into the West Region finished with Elite Eight runs, including a surge as the #12 seed before falling to #2 Oklahoma in San Jose, Calif.
> Here is what you need to know about Mizzou ... Missouri's brand of basketball is called The Fastest 40 Minutes in Basketball and Head Coach Mike Anderson has used it to make six career trips to the NCAA Tournament in nine seasons as a head coach ... Missouri ranks #2 nationally in steals (9.8) and is one of the country's most unselfish teams with eight players boasting 29 or more assists ... In addition, Missouri set the school record for fewest turnovers per game last year and this season's 12.8 turnovers per game is the third fewest in school history ... So while the brand of play is fast, it's fundamentally sound.
> In addition, Missouri is one of just four teams nationally to have five players averaging double figures in scoring (along with Iowa State, Long Beach State and Detroit).
> Missouri enters NCAA play as an 11-seed for the second time ... The Tigers fell to UAB, 66-64, in 1986 ... Missouri was a #10 seed last season and defeated #7 Clemson, 86-78, in Buffalo last year ... Missouri is also facing its fourth Big EAST team in NCAA play the last few seasons ... Mizzou defeated #6 Marquette in 2009 and fell to #1 UConn in the Elite Eight and dropped a 68-59 decision to #2 West Virginia last year in Buffalo.
> Thursday's game marks a homecoming trip of sorts for a pair of Tigers ... Junior Kim English is from nearby Baltimore, Md., while Ricardo Ratliffe is from Hampton, Va. ... Missouri will return to the area next year to face Old Dominion.

MU men's basketball team loses in Big 12 tournament's second round

Missouri's Kim English, left, and Jarrett Sutton watch as their their teammates play against
Texas A&M during the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City.

KANSAS CITY — Mike Anderson was the only man moving on the sideline.
The Missouri men's basketball coach walked up and down the court as he watched his team lose 86-71 to Texas A&M on Thursday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. The Tigers were on their way to being bounced from the Big 12 Conference Tournament and the coach couldn't stand still. As much as he moved, his energy would not transfer to the game.

Point Spread for Missouri vs. Texas Tech Big 12 Tournament Game - Wednesday, 3/9/2011

Missouri Tigers (13-18) vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (22-9)

Big 12 Tournament First Round  Sprint Center  Kansas City, MO
NCAA Basketball: Wednesday March 9, 2011 9:30 PM EST

The Line: Missouri - 12

In possibly Pat Knight's last game at Texas Tech, the 13-18, 5-11 Red Raiders draw 22-9, 8-8 Missouri in the first round of the Big 12 Conference Tournament.
Knight's last season as the Red Raiders' head coach saw a lot of turbulence and not many stretches of sustained success. The Texas Tech head coach was informed last week his services would end effectively after the Red Raiders' season. How will the team who has had three abbreviated winning streaks and five losing streaks this season handle the news on the court?

After a 70-66 defeat to Kansas on Saturday, the Missouri Tigers basketball finished 8-8 in Big 12 play. As a result they are the No. 6 seed in the Big 12 conference tournament, which begins Wednesday in Kansas City.

The Tigers first round opponent is the No. 11 seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders (13-18 overall, 5-11 Big 12). Tip-off is at 8:30 on Wednesday night and the winner plays the next day against No. 3 Texas A&M. Here is a preview for the first round game:

Previous meeting: The Tigers and Red Raiders locked horns on February 15 at Mizzou Arena. Both teams put on an offensive clinic before the Tigers prevailed 92-84.

Texas Tech player to watch: The Tigers need to keep an eye on Red Raiders’ Mike Singletary. The senior forward has averaged 12.7 points per game. With the way the Tigers have fared against big men in recent games, Singletary has the potential to make a major impact.

Storyline: The storyline of this game is the potential end of the Pat Knight era in Lubbock. The Red Raiders fired Knight on Monday, who didn’t live up to this legendary father during his three seasons in west Texas. Knight will coach until the end of the Big 12 tournament, so the Tigers have the opportunity to end his reign at Texas Tech.
